Fireside Chat with Urban Engagements
Today one of our wonderful Swag Bag contributors is Sharise Williams from Urban Engagements. She has mocked up a special item for Eventology 2010 participants.

What is your favorite time of day for a wedding?
Nightime is the best, especially during the cool and warm months. Guest can enjoy the cocktail hour under the stars.

Where is your favorite place for a destination wedding?
I like it when couples go to place that brings fond memories. Destination wedding don’t have to be in the tropics. They could be at the vineyard they went to last valentines and realized they wanted to be together forever. Some even choose to go back to their college town where they met and their love story began.

What is the smartest piece of business advice you were ever given?
My mom told me, if you want something, act like it! I interpret that as, get out there and pursue your dream and DREAM BIG!

What advice would you offer to new comers of the industry?
I'm still a new comer, only 1 ½ years in. Even with that said I would recommend perseverance. The first two to three years are very important. I'm introverted but I told my self that I would not let that stop me from networking, finding and making opportunities. Oh, and get a supportive network of family and friends!

What was the one class that helped you the most in your career?
I took courses with Penn Foster. I found a link to them on The Smart Planner (now Think Splendid) Creativity comes natural, accounting doesn’t! That course covered a lot of the business side that’s need to carry your business from hobby to the real deal.

What advice would you give to newlyweds for a happy marriage?
Men and woman speak different languages in relationships. Be patient, open and honest and over time you will find your own way to communicate with one another.

What was or would be your first dance song at your wedding?
I was married April 12, 2008. We had two songs. The first was All My Life by K-Ci and JoJo and the other was higher by John Legend. My husband surprised me by serenading me as we dance in front of all our family and friends.

What trends do you expect to see in weddings in 2010?
A continuation of attention to detail, small personal touches that give guest a glimpse into something the bride and groom share. Vintage themes, birdcage veils and really great bridal shoes.

Who in your life is your role model and why?
I think I have to give that role to my husband. I admire him for his leadership, strength, desire to help disadvantaged kids, his ability to stand up for his convictions, his faith and intellect.

What is your favorite industry book or magazine?
Hmm only one!? I like to read blogs more than magazines. For trends and creativity I like Style Me Pretty and Southern Weddings for business I read Think Splendid and Sage Wedding Pros pretty faithfully. I still want The Smart Planner to become a book, loved it!

What are your favorite color schemes?
Pale pink and Charcoal Grey
Black, white and red
Bold ethnic colors scheme with rich tones and gold accents

Do you have a favorite venue for weddings and receptions and if so what are they?
I really like Oxon Hill Manor, a state owned mansion here in Maryland. If has a fantastic black and white tiled floor, spiral staircase, room for outdoor and indoor reception and ceremony admit over looks the new National Harbor.

Describe the perfect wedding cake in your opinion.
Anything with rum, no just kidding! I like the classic white wedding cake with fresh flowers and a crystal cake stand.

How do you feel about the smashing of cake in the face at receptions?
If you must, think first! Is this tux rented? How much did dad pay for this dress gain? Lastly, do I really want to get cake in this hair style that took her three ours to get just right?

How did you know this is what you wanted to do in life?
I have wanted to be an entrepreneur since I was about 10. I have had a love for fashion, desire to help other and a passion for planning small parties and trips with my family. After having a family and dedicating myself to them, work and the day to day, my wedding day came. In the process I realized that event planning used all the skills that I have naturally and gave me the creative outlet I so desired. Event planning and design is something I would do even if it didn’t pay well because it makes me happy to help someone else have a wonderful start to the rest of their lives with the one they love.

What brings you the most joy in life?
My kids! They make me laugh when I think I don’t feel like it. They remind me of the good times of my childhood and they have taught me things about myself that no one else could, or at least if they tried I may not have listened. My husband as well, I adore him for supporting me in pursuing my dream of being an entrepreneur.

Thank you so much Sharise for stopping by!
